Research in progress
Objective
An independent Origin-compatible data-analysis and plotting environment — native projects, fitting, transforms, and graphing.
Initial technical approach
Project grammar, fitting operations, transformations, and graph semantics; build on the open LabPlot line where it already fits.
Format and reconstruction
Origin stores its work in proprietary, undocumented project files: .opj (legacy) and .opju, the Unicode successor that has been the default since Origin 2018. Free tools can view and convert these files, but not recompute them.
Open-source readers — liborigin, used by LabPlot and SciDAVis — parse legacy .opj up to roughly the Origin-2017 generation, but they do not read .opju, and none of them recover how a result was computed: the fit model, inputs, and settings behind an analysis. Structurally, .opju replaced the legacy flat object stream with a typed, length-prefixed record stream, so a legacy .opj parser cannot walk it.
Reading modern .opju projects and reconstructing that analysis provenance is the core of Exbound's Origin work — an independent, clean-room reader built on the actively developed LabPlot line. This is early reverse-engineering: the header and object-name layer is verified against real sample files, and the rest is in progress.
This target has a public research dossier with version archaeology, a functional inventory, the reconstruction architecture, and open work packages.
